    • He served as a Captain in the French and Indian Wars and received
      3,000acres in payment in 1780. From Feb. 15, 1770 served as Justice
      ofBotetourte County, Virginia. On May 25, 1771 he bought 646 acres
      nearBuffalo Lick on Reed Creek in present Wythe county, Va from
      Thomas Walkerfor 19.10 pounds. He and his wife Agnes sold 135 acres
      of that toWilliam Montgomery for 100 pounds on Aug. 1, 1771. John
      also served onthe committee setting up Fincastle county Virginia in
      1773. and as aJustice of the Courts of Chancery and Oyer and
      Terminer of that year.
