    • David was married and had family in Toronto before he left to emigrate to United States. There he met Mary Haehnel (probably in Rochester), New York state. She came over with her parents, Gottfied & Christina Haehnel from Germany in 1864 landing in New York city where they had photos taken but they New York to settle in Neustadt,Ontario. Gottfried Haehnel owned a lime kiln but there is no record of such in that area. WE do know from letter kept by her niece, Helen Nelson, that the family greatly objected to their daughter Mary marrying David Montgomery. He was older. They may have known that he was once married (or still married). He had married Mary Potts in Toronto in 1874 and they may have had children (according to his son, Richard Arthur Montgomery of Boston, Mass) However, in spite of her father's objections, Mary Haehnel eloped with David, leaving behind everything she owned. For many years her family believed she was dead as she never contacted her parents again. They may have gone to Alberta Prov by train at that time. Both Edwin & Chas. Albert (Bert) were born in Canada 1887 & 1889. They moved to Chicago, Ill. at least by 1891 where they son Richard Arthur & Florence Elizabeth their only daughter was born. Dick in 1891 & 2 Dec 1992, a daughter born in that city. David was an expert carpenter, wood turner, and cabinet maker. They lived in a multi ethnic neighborhood near Hull House so the children grew up among immigrants from all over Europe. David professed to be a Universalist. Mary Haehnel was United Brethern, a sect very close to Moravian or some Reformed Baptist groups or strict German religious sect. While extremely religious Mary was also of great good humor which was quite in contrast to an almost morbid disposition of her husband. He supposedly often displayed tremendous ill-temper and carried great prejudices against Roman Catholics. This would have come down through all the Montgomery clans who opposed Cathlolics in both Scotland and Ireland. He seldom spoke of his early life in Canada but did instill in his children that they should never forget that they came from an illustrious family. It is probably what prompted his son, Richard to visit Toronto and look up his Aunt Jerusha Cadiuex who then gave him more family history. She told him also that the family had disowned David for deserting his family and going to America.
      Vol. 25, Sheet 18, Line 43 of 1900 U.S. Census for Chicago show, "David Montgomery, white born Apr 1847, Canada (Eng) Prov. AL (resideing Chicago West 14th number 563. In household, the following:
