Notes from Dicie Niggl, 134 Kettle Hole Rd, Bolton, MA 01740,
February1997.
It is said that Hugh and all seven of his sons participated
in the Revolutionary War and all lived to return home, in spite of the
fact that Hugh, Sr. was 71 years of age when he enlisted in the
service of his country. The end of the war found Hugh, Sr. broken in
both health andfortune. After a few years he left his native state
and emigrated with some other members of his family to Kentucky in 1785.
His wife Caroline preceded him in death about 18 years, dying in
Virginia at 56 years of age. Hugh, Sr. was a private in Capt. Arthur
Smith's company, FourthVirginia Regiment.
According to tradition, Hugh served as a private in the
AmericanRevolution, but if true he would have been 71 in 1776. All
of his seven sons are said to have taken part in the Revolution.
Hugh and Caroline Montgomery lived many years near Roanoke Springs in
southwest VA, then migrated to near Mt. Sterling in Montgomery
County, KY, where old Hugh died in 1785. (Henry A. Mounts)
