Per an e-mail from daughter, Constance Backers, Roger was the only one in his family to survive the 1918 influenza epidemic, although he also caught the fever. Orphaned at age 7, he was raised by an aunt and uncle with the help of another aunt and uncle. She was told that Roger's throat was affected by the influenza, probably with a lingering cough. In order to keep him quiet, his aunt taught him how to knit.
