Notes - Lorenzo Dow Montgomery came to Indiana from Lexington, Fayette County, KY. He was married to Mary Guynn. "Pap" as he was lovingly called by the family was a blacksmith by trade and was also inclined toward carpentering as was his grandson, Wilbur A. Montgomery. A hand-made press which he turned out is now the property of Fred L. Pierpont, also a grandson. L.Dow Montgomery's wife Mary J. (Ann or Alice) was born in Kentucky in 1826.
The 1880 census shows Mary, 47. Mary was a tiny woman, not so very pretty, but always in a jolly mood, and always with something witty to say to the children to make them laugh. L.D. died of a heart attack in June 1896 and although he did not accumulate much wealth or worldly goods, he was honored and respected by his many friends and neighbors for his honesty, kindness and industriousness. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Dow" by all who knew him. In personal appearance, he was a small, wirey man.
