| 27104 | WILLIAM J. TURNER was born in Woodford County, March 25, 1821, the only son of William and Rebecca (Dean) Turner, natives respectively of Culpeper County, Va., and Jessamine County, Ky. William Turner was born November 24, 1787, came to Woodford County when quite small with his father, Alexander, and died in 1844. James Dean and Patience (Holeman) Dean, the maternal grandparents of William J. Turner, natives of North Carolina and of English descent, were among the early settlers of Kentucky, and found it necessary to go into Craig's station in order to protect themselves from the depredations of the Indians. They afterward settled in Jessamine County. James Dean was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. William J. Turner was reared on a farm, received a good common-school education, and was married, May 16, 1844, to Miss Bettie E., daughter of James D. and Nancy (Combs) Carpenter, natives of Woodford County. Of the children born to this union six are living: Albert H., Mattie A., John D., William T., James C. and Lizzie H.; four others have died, viz.: Nancy J., James W. S., Fanny R. and Lou Emma. Mr. Turner is a thriving farmer, and the owner of 413 acres in the Sixth Precinct. MARTHA WAS A SISTER TO SARAH HIATT MONTGOMERY, AND LIKE HER SISTER, SHE WAS DISMISSED FROM THE CHURCH FOR MARRYING A NON-QUAKER. THEY LIVED IN GUILFORD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA FOR SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE BECAUSE WILLIAM WAS NOT TAXED IN CARROLL COUNTY(THEN KNOWN AS GRAYSON) UNTIL 1807. THEY OBTAINED SEVERAL TRACTS OF LAND IN THE BURKS FORK AREA: 100 ACRES FROM JOHN PEARSON IN 1810 AND ANOTHER TRACT FROM HIS FATHER-IN-LAW, JOSEPH HIATT. THIS TRACT WAS POSSIBLY A GIFT. WILLIAM AND MARTHA MONTGOMERY SOLD THEIR PROPERTY AND MOVED TO HENDRICKS COUNTY, INDIANA IN 1835. MARTHA HAD REJOINED THE QUAKER CHURCH AND WAS GIVEN A CERTIFICATE TO A QUAKER MEETING IN INDIANA. | 27108 | William Montgomery was a Colonel in the Indiana State Military, and was aremarkably shrewd, and a fine looking man. He was County Commissionerfrom 1837 to 1842, and a member of the State Legislature of Indiana in1834 to 1844. (1) William lived on a farm one-fourth mile south of the Joseph Clark William lived on a farm one-fourth mile south of the Joseph ClarkCemetery. He died in 1847, and was the second person to be buriedthere. A child of his was the first to be buried there. | 27110 | William Morrison Kendrick was made prisoner after the December 7, 1937 Rebellion and Mary Ann Montgomery, his wife petitioned the state for the release of her husband. Her house was robbed several times and almost everything of value taken. This was certainly part of the so-called Uprising where the British burned down the Montgomery Tavern as this is dated 12 Dec. 1837 and refers back five days which makes it the 7th, date of what is also called "The Troubles of 1837." Have copied from Land & Deed records of Early York, land purchased by Duke William Kendrick (father of William Kendrick of York Mills) in 1804. Record copy is in file and sent another off to Arnold Kendrick Stewart. It should be noted how many times the middle names correspond with surnames of those who married into the Montgomery family. In this case see where where Frances or "Fanny" Montgomery, 8th child of Alexander Jr. & Juda Myer married a Hugh Morrison. There certainly must be a connection between the Kendricks and the Morrisons. William Morrison Kendrick's father must have married some Morrison daughter for him to have Morrison as his middle name. I can try to get such info either from U.E. Loyalist files or else from the Ontario Genealogical Society using their "Toronto Tree" Queries section. Oct 15, 1994-Entry upon receipt of information regarding the Morrison family mentioned above. Received from Martha Hemphill, Pres. of U.E.Loyalists. Hugh Morrison who married Frances "Fanny" Montgomery was a retired Capt. of the Black Watch Highlanders who came to York in 1829. He was a widow with five children. The two oldest were boys and three were daughters, mother was Mary Curran who died in Scotland. Hugh & Fanny married in 1830 and had a son, Hugh Angus Morrison who worked for the Railroad for twenty-four years as conductor between Toronto and London. The other three born to them were daughters. In all Hugh Morrison had six daughters none old enough to have been eligible to have married a Kendrick male. There was a Dr. Thomas Morrison who was medical inspector in 1820's and Mayor of Toronto in 1836. He may have had daughters tho married a Kendrick son.
